Heat network "Neue Mitte Salem"

Digitalisation of the heating network with "HeatWatch Connect"

Im Auftrag von

In the municipality of Salem in the Lake Constance district, Thüga Energie GmbH operates the "Neue Mitte Salem" heating network on the basis of a highly efficient CHP plant. In spring 2024, Thüga Energie decided to launch a project to digitalise and optimise the heating network and the connected heating centre in order to further increase the efficiency of the heating network and at the same time prepare for the future automation requirements of the energy market.

Added value through data analytics

In the Salem project, THEV is relying on the new joint offering "HeatWatch Connect" from Mondas and providata GmbH, which combines the energy data analytics expertise of Mondas with the reliable measuring equipment and wireless technology of providata GmbH in a single service package.

A CHP unit, two peak-load boilers, two buffer storage tanks and the heat consumers' house transfer stations are connected to the mondas® data analytics platform via HeatWatch Connect in Salem. The measurement concept was developed by providata GmbH, which is also responsible for the IoT connection of the systems.

Since the start of the project, time series data from around 300 data points has been analysed almost in real time. The fully automatically calculated KPIs are clearly displayed in the HeatWatch cockpit. Weather forecasts are fed in so that the requirements of heat consumers - homes and businesses - can be predicted.

Our project in Salem with Mondas and providata has got off to a very good start and is already showing concrete optimisation potential by combining the different data streams. Integrating Syneco will make this solution even more rounded.
I am convinced that this modular product system will provide the same added value for many other companies in the Thüga Group and is absolutely essential.
- Peter Ehret, Head of Heat, Generation and Operation, Thüga Energie GmbH

HeatWatch® Connect - added value for heating network operation:

  • Fast and comprehensive system and heating network analyses for reduced service calls

  • Detection and mobilisation of efficiency potential

  • Predictive maintenance, resulting in fewer and more efficient service and maintenance trips

  • Harmonisation of generation, heat storage and consumption

  • Accurate heat demand forecasts thanks to additional consumption information from the network

  • Not least: Fast and efficient contribution to climate protection

The "Neue Mitte Salem" heating network

Commissioning: 2019
Length of the district heating network: ca. 1.2 km
Output of CHP unit: 240 kWel , 374 kWth
Peak load boiler: 2 x 500 kWth
Buffer storage tank: 2 x 10 m³
Heat consumer: 281 apartments
Town hall with tourist information
Municipal library,
Health center,
Gastronomy,
Grocery and drugstore market

Mobilising the potential for flexibility

Another partner in the project is Syneco Trading GmbH, which controls the Salem CHP unit and markets the electricity generated. By connecting and analysing the CHP unit on the mondas® data platform, the operations managers receive valuable information that increases the accuracy of the heat demand forecast.

With HeatWatch® Connect, CHP operation and the connected heating network can be optimised even more precisely in terms of electricity management thanks to the new additional information from HeatWatch Connect. Depending on current market conditions, load peaks can be strategically covered or buffer storage tanks can be filled in good time.

Conclusion: The heating network in Salem will not only become more efficient with "HeatWatch® Connect", but is also ideally equipped for the electricity market design of the future.
