Depending on their location, wind turbines are subject to a legal shutdown requirement to protect bats. During their flight season, turbines must be shut down based on various criteria such as time of day, external temperature, wind speed and precipitation, to ensure bats are not endangered.
Actual shutdown times need to be documented and submitted for review to the responsible state environmental agency at the end of the year. 95% of shutdown times must be met, or substantial fines are imposed.
