IoT Monitoring of CHP Plants – Important Potential
Cogeneration of heat and power has become a key element of our power supply system. Over the last ten years, more than 50,000 cogeneration plants have been approved in Germany – most with a capacity of less than 1 MW.
This number is set to rise with the continuing decentralisation of the energy industry.
CHP plants are being integrated into apartment buildings for tenant power systems; they supply districts of different sizes via local heating networks; and they are used by commercial enterprises for their own power supply. The plants are decentralised and widely distributed across different areas.
Introducing mondas® technology means that operators can considerably reduce their service needs and thus their operating costs – even as their plant portfolio grows. With mondas®, expensive and time-consuming scheduled service visits are a thing of the past. Instead, service calls are only made when specifically needed.
Systematic Error Analysis With IoT Monitoring
The mondas® IoT platform does not just indicate that an error has occurred, but also gives concrete instructions for action. This is particularly helpful for older plants that are nearing the end of their technical service life, when the need for maintenance and servicing increases disproportionately – making predictive maintenance all the more worthwhile.
The system parameters and measurement data are transmitted via the web interface from the CHP plant to the mondas® IoT platform for evaluation. All of this happens almost in real time – no matter whether a handful of CHP plants have been connected, or hundreds. Any CHP plant that is added to the portfolio can be integrated into the system in a matter of minutes.
Energy-efficient operation is always a key optimisation objective for combined power and heat production. For example, if a CHP plant exceeds a certain number of start-ups per day, energy efficiency can fall by up to 25 percent. This means higher energy consumption, lower cost efficiency, and thus fewer beneficial effects for the climate. The mondas® analytic software identifies faults such as these immediately so that they can be remedied.
Optimising CHP Service Teams Thanks to Efficient Maintenance
The mondas® IoT platform automatically generates service and maintenance orders. Scheduled maintenance is eliminated and service calls are made only when needed. This reduces the number of unnecessary journeys. The service team can identify the plant’s exact problem before setting off.
This means that they can plan their maintenance calls according to urgency and travel to the site with the needed spare parts. This cuts travel costs and prevents unnecessary journeys, reducing the amount of unproductive time spent on the road. Lower mileage and more energy-efficient operation of CHP plants ultimately benefit the climate, too.
Another advantage is that the CHP plant can be adjusted to operate at maximum efficiency immediately after commissioning. As the IoT platform records operating statuses in real time, any optimisation potential is identified immediately. That means that the CHP plant has high availability and a high efficiency rating right from the first hour of operation.
You will benefit from low maintenance and operating costs for years to come. This ultimately means that your plant portfolio can be operated much more profitably. With mondas® IoT monitoring, you’ll be able to fix potential sources of error early on, preventing the CHP plant from malfunctioning or shutting down.
mondas® technology also offers more comprehensive customer service, for example when it comes to invoicing.
The Special Features of the IoT Platform
- Versatile: Reliably recognises various Fieldbus protocols.
- efficient: The HDF5 data format allows extremely fast processing even of extensive time series.
- simple: Minimal hardware requirements.
- scalable: Once defined, an analysis or evaluation can be applied to any number of plants.
- secure: Meets all data security requirements at all times.
- flexible: Data management is possible on-premises or via the cloud.
Simple Application
With mondas®, entering the digital age is as simple as using the IoT platform. In a first step, we work with our customers to identify their specific optimisation goals. We then build on this by configuring the platform user interface to meet the customer’s needs.
Once this has been done, using and expanding the system couldn’t be simpler. Any additional plants can be added quickly and easily via drag and drop. New plants are recognised and their data is analysed immediately.
A sophisticated metadata system ensures solutions which can be rapidly configured and scaled. The algorithms can be applied to analyse any number of plants of the same type in just a short space of time. Customised solutions are easy to configure, eliminating the need for complex and expensive programming. The major advantage of the mondas® system is its high scalability.
The dashboard system has a clear structure, can be freely configured and gives a quick overview of the most important operating statuses.
