Award-winning!

Next-Generation Heat Network
In an award-winning solar heat network project in Freiburg, 39 apartment buildings each had a solar thermal system installed on their roof. In addition to supplying the individual buildings with heat, the solar thermal systems are integrated into a local heating network. The mondas® IoT platform analyses operational data from more than 4,000 measurement points – in real time.
AI algorithms forecast the operating statuses of the solar systems and the heating demand of each building, so that excess yields from one system can be delivered to buildings whose own system is not expected to generate enough energy to meet demand.
The major advantage of this cooperative form of supply is that heat can be supplied directly to the target buildings and does not need to circulate through the entire heat network. This minimises distribution losses.
What the IoT Platform Can Do
- record and analyse measurement data
- forecast heating demand
- implement AI control algorithms using analytics software
- control smart heat networks
Optimising the Electricity Grid for Economical Operation
With the mondas® IoT platform, the heat network can be run almost exclusively on solar power over the summer months. During the rest of the year, a biogas CHP plant supplies additional heat to the district heating network. District heating can also be added at any given time and for any given building. This, too, minimises energy losses in the network.
At the same time, it makes it possible to operate the biogas CHP plant in response to time-of-use electricity pricing. The CHP plant is then taken into operation for a short time only, for instance to cover peak demand within its own power network. In such cases, the solar heat network functions as a buffer, which saves on electricity costs.
In 2019, the Freiburg solar heat network received the renowned The smarter E AWARD in the Outstanding Projects category.
Enter a New Age With mondas®
Benefit from our experience in the monitoring, control and technical commissioning of heat networks. Digitalisation and IoT are the backbone of smart urban heat networks in the post-fossil era. The share of other renewables in the grid can be considerably increased thanks to analysis and control, while heating losses in the local heating network can be reduced.
Reducing the share of fossil energy in the grid benefits the climate as well as making for lower long-term operating costs.
Connecting heat networks to the mondas® IoT platform also allows cost-efficient monitoring. Operators can continuously monitor and optimise their local heating network. This is particularly recommended whenever the network supplies consumers who have a complex demand structure. AI-based demand forecasts further increase supply security even when weather conditions result in irregular solar irradiance.
This is why it makes sense to integrate the mondas® IoT platform before a heat network is commissioned, in order to detect faults in the control system or electrical connections early on. Faults such as these often reduce the operating efficiency of the entire system.
Connecting the system to the IoT platform helps identify these problems quickly so that they can be immediately resolved.
This allows the heat network to run smoothly with the utmost efficiency right from the word go, making complaints by users and operators a thing of the past.
