IoT monitoring of CHP plants – important potential
Cogeneration of heat and power has become a key element of our power supply system. Over the last ten years, more than 50,000 cogeneration plants have been approved in Germany – most with a capacity of less than 1 MW.
This number is set to rise with the continuing decentralisation of the energy industry.
CHP plants are being integrated into apartment buildings for tenant power systems; they supply districts of different sizes via local heating networks; and they are used by commercial enterprises for their own power supply. The plants are decentralised and widely distributed across different areas.
Introducing mondas® technology means that operators can considerably reduce their service needs and thus their operating costs – even as their plant portfolio grows. With mondas®, expensive and time-consuming scheduled service visits are a thing of the past. Instead, service calls are only made when specifically needed.
Systematic error analysis with IoT monitoring
The mondas® IoT platform does not just indicate that an error has occurred, but also gives concrete instructions for action. This is particularly helpful for older plants that are nearing the end of their technical service life, when the need for maintenance and servicing increases disproportionately – making predictive maintenance all the more worthwhile.
The system parameters and measurement data are transmitted via the web interface from the CHP plant to the mondas® IoT platform for evaluation. All of this happens almost in real time – no matter whether a handful of CHP plants have been connected, or hundreds. Any CHP plant that is added to the portfolio can be integrated into the system in a matter of minutes.
Energy-efficient operation is always a key optimisation objective for combined power and heat production. For example, if a CHP plant exceeds a certain number of start-ups per day, energy efficiency can fall by up to 25 percent. This means higher energy consumption, lower cost efficiency, and thus fewer beneficial effects for the climate. The mondas® analytic software identifies faults such as these immediately so that they can be remedied.
